Alex Scott is on the right path, but Johnson wants to see more

Scott isn’t short of admirers. Reports have Bournemouth holding out for a fee close to $133m. Andoni Iraola coached him on the south coast before taking the Liverpool job. He is also reportedly interested in bringing Scott to Anfield.

For Johnson, none of that is quite enough yet. The only question that matters is whether Scott can do it at a club expected to win things every week.

Glen Johnson on Chelsea

“Alex Scott is a good player but I haven’t seen enough of him to say if he’s at the top-four level. We don’t know yet, but he’s definitely shown some glimpses and started the season very well, and obviously got himself in the England fold, and that’s only going to boost his confidence.”

The trajectory Scott is on, in Johnson’s view, is the right one. It just isn’t yet clear he’s at the level needed to pull on a Chelsea jersey.

“I think I need to see some more, but I think he’s definitely on the right path to be playing for one of the top teams.”

Frenkie de Jong would be a gamble worth taking, if he’s fit

Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso is said to be a long-standing admirer of de Jong, in particular his passing range. However, a big issue for the Dutchman has been injuries.

He tore a medial collateral ligament during the Netherlands’ World Cup exit to Morocco in June. It has kept him out since. He has only just worked his way back into Barcelona coach Hansi Flick’s game-day squad as a substitute.

Glen Johnson on Chelsea

“If Frenkie de Jong is fit, he’s a great player. I don’t know how he is with the recent injury, but he’s been out for a while and how the deal would go in terms of finances, God knows what he would cost, but as long as he’s fit, then, yeah, I think he’d be a great signing.”

Cole Palmer’s dip was a fitness issue, not form

A persistent groin problem dragged on through the back end of last season for Chelsea star Palmer. It hampered the form and performances fans have come to expect from the attacking midfielder. It ultimately cost him his place in England’s World Cup squad.

This season, though, he has four goals in 10 appearances across all competitions. The Palmer of old is beginning to find his way back. That’s despite the red card he received in the London derby against Tottenham over the weekend.

Glen Johnson on Chelsea

“Of course players can always improve in terms of numbers but I think we’re seeing Palmer at his best again. We all know what he’s capable of, but last season he was playing with injuries so naturally he couldn’t do what he needed to do to impact games.”

In Johnson’s view, a player carrying an injury through the final stretch of last season was never going to show what he’s capable of.

Glen Johnson on Chelsea

“We’re seeing this Cole Palmer because he’s fit and he’s playing regularly because his ability has never been questioned, but as we know, he was nursing an injury for the last sort of 10 games last season, and that’s hard for anyone to do, so I think we are just seeing him back fit and enjoying his football.”

Palmer’s new deal shuts the door on an exit

Palmer joined Chelsea from Manchester City for £42.5m in 2023. He has racked up 91 goal contributions in 138 appearances since. Chelsea have now extended his contract by a further year, tying him to the club until 2034. It’s a lengthy deal. Yet Johnson sees it as Chelsea shutting the door on any club hoping to come sniffing for Palmer’s services.

Glen Johnson on Chelsea

“With his new contract Palmer will get that security and Chelsea now know that if everything goes well, they’ve got a fantastic player on their hands that no one can touch. The price that other teams would have to pay for him now would just be crazy and that would just put teams off. Time will tell, but it could be a great deal for Chelsea and him if it keeps going this way.”

Johnson doesn’t rule out a club eventually paying what it takes. He points to how far transfer fees have climbed in recent years. Yet he’s clear that Chelsea have made signing Palmer as unappealing as possible for their rivals.

Glen Johnson on Chelsea

“Years ago we would have said that no one would have paid £100 million for a player but things obviously change and keep going up, so I wouldn’t say never. I just think that with the new extension of the contract and the length of the contract, you’d have to pay a lot of money. Probably £50 million more than you even think he’s worth, just to get him out of that contract, so I just don’t think it would be in anyone’s benefit to do that.”

“Of course he’s a great player, but I think Chelsea would have just done this in a way that shuts that door and makes it almost impossible for anyone to get him.”
