How the rankings work
Countries enter this interactive when they are credited as a production country on an American film. They are then compared through an overall ranking plus separate Box Office and Film Production views. The U.S. is excluded from every map, ranking, trend and table so it does not dominate the international comparison; U.S. results are presented separately in the article intro.
- Overall ranking gives Box Office and Film Production equal 50/50 weighting after both measures are normalized against the leading country in the selected view. The resulting score is used only to determine rank order.
- Allocated Worldwide Box Office divides each film's worldwide gross evenly across all of its credited production countries. For example, a $1 billion film credited to the U.S. and U.K. contributes $500 million to the U.K. in this interactive; the U.S. share is not displayed.
- Film Production counts how many American films credit each country or territory as a production country. It includes both solo productions and co-productions.
- Production Type appears only in the full table when Film Production is selected. A solo production has one credited production country; a co-production has more than one.
- Box office is not local ticket sales. A country's allocated total reflects its production credit on films and does not represent box office earned from audiences in that country.
- Genre filters use film-level genre metadata from the source dataset. Films with multiple genre labels can appear in more than one genre view.
- Production country is not filming location. A production credit does not necessarily indicate where all filming took place or where production spending occurred.
About the data
The source dataset covers 3,254 American films released from 2010 through 2026 across 88 credited production countries and territories, including the U.S. This interactive displays the 87 countries and territories outside the U.S. that appear in the production-country data. Six films are missing production-country data, and genre labels are available for 3,252 films. The 2026 data currently runs through August.
